Thanksgiving Goose Hunt

Every year, my boys (dad, father-in-law, cousin Tom, buddy Chris) and I go on a goose hunt the day after Thanksgiving. We started this tradition 4 years ago.

The first year, we used a private guide service out of Eagle Lake, and we had a great time. Shot a bunch of geese and few ducks, but mainly we were successful. Unfortunately, that guide lost his lease and we weren't able to use him the following 2 years.

The second and third years, we used Larry Gore's Eagle Lake and Katy Praire Outfitters. It was awful. The guides we had both years were young and inexperienced, and for the size group we had we paid too much to be this unsuccessful. It was apparent that this outfit had gotten too commercial to accomodate our group. They weren't scouting the fields, we did all the work, and we weren't allowed to call (or call the shot). At $125/person, we came home with 8 ducks and 1 goose for those 2 years combined, and we were a pissed off group of hunters.

Now this year, my buddy Chris found out about Butch Waggoner's guide service. This fella was professional, put out the decoys the night before, allowed us to call, took us to/from the field via 4wheeler, and was an all around great guy. We had an awesome hunt! Took 18 geese and 2 ducks! Heck of a day. I will post some pictures soon, but we were swarmed with geese. He scouted and scouted, and set us up in a position to be successful. And that is what a good guide does.

We understand you won't always have a career day, but at least put yourself in a position to be successful. Hunting is exactly that, hunting. You know the cliche'. However, a good hunter knows he needs to maximize his potential to be successful, and Butch Waggoner filled the bill. We will book him again for sure.

I'm out.
