Some hog temptation, Pig Liquor!

In an effort to improve our chances of catching a hog in our trap, I picked up a jug of Pig Liquor to pour on the corn/ground inside the trap.  My buddy Mark has a game camera watching the trap now, and all of the pics show the pigs all AROUND the trap, but certainly not in it. We have had the trap setup now for over 2 months, and not a thing in it.  Our property is not riddled with pigs, but there are some whoppers on camera as I have posted before.

This Pig Liquor bait has a rather sweet aroma but I hope it will attract the pigs into the pen.  I poured it over the corn, the ground, and slung some onto the tree.  WE have tried quite a few things, including souring the corn, and broadcasting it up and down the trail.  Again, seeing activity, but nothing in the pen other than raccoons and a deer.  I am going to get some pictures from the game cam and post them here.

Public lottery hunt... planning phase.

My cousin Tom and I are going on a public land deer hunt here in Texas in early January (9-11). We are preparing now, as we will be hunting in unfamiliar territory. We'll be hunting the Lake Houston State Park, which is just northest of Houston about 45 minutes to an hour. Over the next couple of weeks I'll be blogging about our preparation. So, right now we are discussing which weapon to use (rifle or shotgun). I think when we go scouting, we will see what the terrain is looking like. If the shot is less than 50 yards and heavy pine tress abound, shotgun for sure (this is most likely). Otherwise, I'll be using the trusty 30/30 my uncle gave me a few years ago. Either way, I am pumped. Nothing better than getting out in the woods to scout. I am hoping to get this climber tree stand for Christmas that I can use, otherwise I'll be sitting at the base of a tree and keeping the eyes peeled.

I feel lucky...

As I have started blogging, and thinking about all the hunts I have gone on over the past couple of years, there is a common thread for me and my hunting experiences. Either my uncle or my father-in-law (FIL) were there. Both of them are like father figures to me, even though I do have a very wonderful and loving father (a non hunter). All of my hunting adventures and experiences have been magnified by having the two of them with me, in particular in the outdoors. Being in the outdoors is a gift and an honor, and spending it with two of my best friends has truly been special for me. My uncle lives in South Carolina, and during my early hunting ventures, he really nurtured my spirit and friendship by "training" me and pointing out things I didn't know as well as building up my excitement, hence the father figure-esque description. But, he never did it in a condescending way. I truly count him in my circle of best friends. I shot my first buck, turkey, and goose

Turkey hunt around the corner!!!

Hey all, I know it has been a while, but my family has been dealing with some very serious issues. It involves cancer, and that is all I really want to say about it. Anyway, enough apologies... I am excited about my upcoming turkey hunt! I need to get out in the woods and breathe some woodland air. I have been practicing my box call, slate call, and started tinkering with the reed call. I just don't have confidence in those reed calls yet. I can't consistently get the sound I want. I can't purr yet with it either. Granted, I honestly haven't worked on it as much as I should have before heading into the woods, and it would free up my hands for my other gear and whatnot, but confidence is a huge issue in the woods. My cousin Tom has been practicing his reeds, too, and I am counting on him bringin me a big ol' bird! If anyone has advice on the the reed calls... other than practice, practice, practice! Please let me know!
