2011 Deer season (rifle) in Texas is 1 week away!

So, what rituals and things do you do to prepare?  Here is my breakdown of things I have been doing this month to get ready for the season (in no particular order).

  • I have been going out every week or so to pull SD cards from my cameras in anticipation!  Trying to figure out when the deer are coming/going as well as WHAT deer are coming/going.  It certainly hasn't helped my buck fever.
  • Sighted in the guns.  My brother and I went to the range and made sure all the guns were still on target.  We each shot the 3 rifles we'll use this season to ensure we are both seeing the same results.  We are using:
    • Marlin .30-30 with a Leupold VX2 4-12x40 scope.  Real nice brush gun, but I want to put a 3-9x50 scope on it.  I have shot maybe 2 deer with this gun.
    • Remington 700 ADL .270 with a Leupold VX2 3-9x50 scope.  My first gun, and it has been a solid rifle for years.  I have taken MANY deer with this gun.
    • Remington 700 SPS .308 Left handed with a Nikon Monarch 3.5-10x50 scope.  This is my newest rifle and it is fantastic.  This gun has a bull barrel and I used it last year to take my first deer with it.  This gun is very accurate and comfortable to shoot.
  • Washed my clothes in the Scent Killer laundry detergent and dryer sheets.
  • Got my Thermacell all set in my backpack to ward off mosquitos.
  • Got my game cleaning "kit" to make sure I have sharp knives, gloves, zip ties, and the like for after a harvest.
  • Feeders on the lease are set to run twice a day
  • Corn has been loaded
  • Food plot has been planted and and fertilized.
I am sure there are more, and I will add them... but I am curious what other people might do to prepare for the season?

Public lottery hunt... planning phase.

My cousin Tom and I are going on a public land deer hunt here in Texas in early January (9-11). We are preparing now, as we will be hunting in unfamiliar territory. We'll be hunting the Lake Houston State Park, which is just northest of Houston about 45 minutes to an hour. Over the next couple of weeks I'll be blogging about our preparation. So, right now we are discussing which weapon to use (rifle or shotgun). I think when we go scouting, we will see what the terrain is looking like. If the shot is less than 50 yards and heavy pine tress abound, shotgun for sure (this is most likely). Otherwise, I'll be using the trusty 30/30 my uncle gave me a few years ago. Either way, I am pumped. Nothing better than getting out in the woods to scout. I am hoping to get this climber tree stand for Christmas that I can use, otherwise I'll be sitting at the base of a tree and keeping the eyes peeled.

I feel lucky...

As I have started blogging, and thinking about all the hunts I have gone on over the past couple of years, there is a common thread for me and my hunting experiences. Either my uncle or my father-in-law (FIL) were there. Both of them are like father figures to me, even though I do have a very wonderful and loving father (a non hunter). All of my hunting adventures and experiences have been magnified by having the two of them with me, in particular in the outdoors. Being in the outdoors is a gift and an honor, and spending it with two of my best friends has truly been special for me. My uncle lives in South Carolina, and during my early hunting ventures, he really nurtured my spirit and friendship by "training" me and pointing out things I didn't know as well as building up my excitement, hence the father figure-esque description. But, he never did it in a condescending way. I truly count him in my circle of best friends. I shot my first buck, turkey, and goose

Plot is set, blinds are set, now we wait!

The last week has really got the blood pumping with cooler morning temperatures.  The fever is in! I need to take some pictures now that I have disc-ed and seeded the field, but here is the food plot right after it was mowed with a brush hog.  I put out Tecomate MAX Attract mixed with Monster Mix ( recommended for my zone on the Tecomate website ).  They also noted Chicory, but I didn't find it in stock at Gander Mountain . Also attached a picture of my "penthouse" blind ( 4x6 Shadow Hunter ) that is 6' tall on Shadow Hunter elevators .  The installation of elevators went quite smooth.  The instructions are easy to follow, and actually the biggest issue we had is related to my underpowered cordless drill.  I have a 14volt Ryobi, and really need an 18volt.  More power, more torque, longer battery life, etc... the Ryobi was actually fine brand new, but it definitely was wiped out.  If I had other jobs to do that day, I would have been out of luck.
