Daughters first hunt and the food plot is looking strong

So I went out the day after Thanksgiving, and took my daughter on her first hunt.  We were really just there to sit and watch deer, we didn't even take a rifle.  I wanted her to experience sitting in the blind, see what comes out, enjoy the serenity of being quiet in the woods, and enjoying my time her!  For a 6 yr old, she did very well.  We were only going to sit for about an hour and a half, and that was just the right amount of time.  She started to get a little bored, so I let her play a game on my phone.  As it turns out, we didn't have anything come visit the field that evening other than an owl and quite a few doves.  Either way, she asked a lot of good questions, and was actively looking for action.  Although, as with any youngster, the question "So, when are the deer going to come?" made me laugh... as I ask myself that a lot!  :)


Also while there, I noticed how well the food plot is coming in!  Lots of greenery, and thanks to the rain we have been getting, it is well over a foot tall in several places!  There is a lot of track going in/around it.  I am going to relocate my trail cam to see what is getting on it.

Review of my Polaris Sportsman 550 XP

First off, I love this 4wheeler.  Part of the reason I love it is due to the fact that I needed it so badly to do work on my lease, the other reason is that it has all the features I wanted and then some.  The Polaris Sportsman 550 is a very big rig.  Bigger than I realized in fact.  I have had it now for approximately 4 months, and taken it on many trips to the lease.  The pros: 1)  It is very strong.  There is no doubt it has the muscle.  Towing a trailer full of corn, me, a passenger, and 2 cargo racks full of gear was effortless.  Keep in mind that when I was shopping for a 4wheeler, I was thinking I could get a 350 or 400 size rig that had an automatic tranny, but this was not true (or I didn't see one), so the Polaris 550 was the smallest motor that had an automatic, and I happen to like the Polaris look/feel. 2)  I like the composite rack and with the lock & ride accessory items.  I have the gun boot and this new car...

Public lottery hunt... planning phase.

My cousin Tom and I are going on a public land deer hunt here in Texas in early January (9-11). We are preparing now, as we will be hunting in unfamiliar territory. We'll be hunting the Lake Houston State Park, which is just northest of Houston about 45 minutes to an hour. Over the next couple of weeks I'll be blogging about our preparation. So, right now we are discussing which weapon to use (rifle or shotgun). I think when we go scouting, we will see what the terrain is looking like. If the shot is less than 50 yards and heavy pine tress abound, shotgun for sure (this is most likely). Otherwise, I'll be using the trusty 30/30 my uncle gave me a few years ago. Either way, I am pumped. Nothing better than getting out in the woods to scout. I am hoping to get this climber tree stand for Christmas that I can use, otherwise I'll be sitting at the base of a tree and keeping the eyes peeled.
